Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The speculation around The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
