Pentagon Report Concludes Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon report has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute included particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen against Houthi militants. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the group allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Potential Threat to Troops

The internal investigation found that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed information that would not have risked lives or compromised the mission. He added that he had the right to downgrade information and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public later this week.
