Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then found multiple other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say early analysis suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; investigators are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the public for tips.
An important representative said the attack made him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he wrote on a platform, recalling the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
